Limitation

from Liminal by Samuel Joseph Kim

about

This song is actually an attempt to totally rearrange the song “Useless”. I slowed it down, changed chords and changed sounds. It started to evolve but I got stuck for months on it. I eventually gave up on it and went back to the original structure and it became “Useless”. However, I gave one more pass to this more subdued version and found it compelling again. In particular, I had this outtake vocal where I sing, “I don’t know if we get to live that long.” It was on loop over and over again, and then all of a sudden it just turned into this meditative song. That idea of coming to terms of how fragile we all are can be intimidating or can invite grieving, or it can also be tremendously liberating. I wanted all of that to be in that song.

lyrics

I don't know if we ever get to be that strong
I don't know if we ever live that long

We could halve the world in two
I don't know where I'd go without you
